Introduction
This FAQ details the steps needed to link two copies of League Bowling on the Neo Geo home cart system for multi-play. League Bowling is one of three games (the others being Thrash Rally and Riding Hero) to make use of this feature. When games are linked, two Neo Geo home cart systems work in parallel, allowing more players, more fun, and more competition.
It is a shame that so few Neo games make use of this feature, as it ups the playability of the two games linked substantially. Imagine the possibilities with linked carts of King of Fighters! You could host a huge tournament! Too bad SNK only used this feature on early 1st generation games.
Why would I want to link up League Bowling?
The question should be why wouldn't you want to link League Bowling? Normally, 1-4 players can play League Bowling on one TV. If a 3 to 4 player game is played, controllers have to be passed around and shared. When the communications link is used, there is no more need to pass controllers around. Two monitors, two games, two systems, and 4 controllers or joysticks are used for continuous play. But that's not all: up to 4 Neo Geo systems can be linked for 8 players (with League Bowling anyway)!!!!
What you will need: (for 3-4 player)
2 Neo Geo Home Cart systems and all necessary hook-ups for both
2 TVs or Monitors
2 Copies of League Bowling (Japanese and U.S.versions are both compatible for link-up)
A stereo audio cable with two 8th inch male plugs ends. The cable should be at least 1 foot in length to allow easy connection between the two carts. The cable used in this exercise is a Radio Shack 1ft. Shielded Stereo Audio Cable, part no. 42-2497. For more than 4 players, you will need a cable with the same stereo plugs, but it must also have a female input for another 8th inch stereo cable to allow the third or fourth system to connect.
Any combination of 4 controllers or Joysticks
Procedure:
1. Connect two Neo Geo cart systems up to two separate TVs. Place the systems as close as possible to each other. This will make connecting the systems together easier, and require a short communications link cable.
2. Insert the stereo audio cable into the hole on top of each cart. Remember, the cable you use should have two rings on the tip (stereo).
!Warning! Using a mono cable with one ring on the tip could cause damage to your carts. Check your cable carefully. If you do destroy your carts because you didn't heed our warning, don't come crying to us!
3. Turn on both systems. The first player on either Neo Geo system should press start. All other players should just wait.
4. At the start menu, scroll down to Multi-link play.
*Whoever selects Multi-link play first is designated as player one, and will be in charge of selecting modes and such. If everyone decides to do this at once, the systems will not link properly.
5. Select Regulation, Flash, or Strike 90.
6. The message Waiting for other players to file will appear. Everyone else must press start at this screen.
7. Your bowler's head should come up on the screen. When he says, Hey, Let's Bowl! and gives you a thumb's up, you must yell, BEEEEEEEEEEAOTCH!
Note: The music will not be in sync between the two systems. Plus, player 1 and 2 do not have to wait for player 3 and 4 to finish up before you continue, unless it is the last frame where scores are tallied up.
Troubleshooting:
Q: The countdown during the Waiting for other players to file screen is out of synch. The link up game won't start. What do I do?
A: Don't stress it! If both players select link mode at the same time, the game won't know which players to designate as player 1,2,3,4. Follow the above steps 4-8, and things will be fine.
Q: The link cable doesn't fit when I insert it into each cart. What gives?
A: Are you sure it's a Stereo Audio Cable with two rings on the tip? Is it an 8th inch plug? It should resemble male headphone plugs on each end.
Q: We've been playing League Bowling for many hours now, but we're not enjoying it as much as we should be. Is there anything we can do?
A: See step 8. Did you yell BEEEEEEEEEAOTCH when he gives you the thumbs up? It should go like this:
Pete: Hey! Let's bowl!
(Thumbs up commences)
You: (at the moment of the Thumbs up) BEEEEEEEEEAOTCH!!!
